What is the A1/A3 license?

If you have a drone with a camera, you need a license. It is that simple.

The A1/A3 license is the basic UAS pilot certificate within the open category. It is the mandatory starting point for any drone pilot in Spain and across the European Union. With it you demonstrate that you know the essential rules of safety, privacy and responsible operation.

A1 certificate

Fly drones under 250 g with a C0 class marking.

A3 certificate

Operate drones of up to 25 kg with a C1, C3 or C4 class marking.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a license if my drone has no camera?
If it weighs less than 250 g and has no camera, you can fly without a license. In every other case, the A1/A3 is mandatory.

How many questions does the exam have?
40 multiple-choice questions. You need 75% to pass. You have two attempts.

Is the license valid across Europe?
Yes. The A1/A3 certificate is based on EASA regulations and is recognised in every country in the European Union.

What happens if I fail the exam?
You can apply again through AESA and resit it with no penalty.

Does the A1/A3 allow me to take the A2 afterwards?
Yes, it is the mandatory prerequisite for the A2.
